Full Spectrum Bird Lights 

What do we mean by full spectrum light?
By full spectrum light, we mean a balanced light output across the full spectrum, including the UV segment. Many modem triphosphor tubes have three peaks of energy that match the three colours that our eyes perceive. Thus the tube’s effective output is maximised to the human eye, and the tube will appear very bright. These peaks do not necessarily match the avian eye, and there would be no UV present.

Vitamin D3 Synthesis
Vitamin D3 is required by birds for healthy bone development. Many species can synthesize vitamin D3 from sunlight through their skin. Specifically, it is the UVB light within the spectrum that enables D3 synthesis.

As birds are covered in feathers, they are unable to use their skin in this way. In most birds, the preen gland collects the precursor D3 from the bloodstream, and concentrates it in the gland oils. These are then exposed to UVB light by the bird spreading the gland oils on to its feathers during preening. The bird then ingests the UV exposed material when it preens itself again, and oil enters the body as previtamin D. The liver and kidney then convert this to vitamin D3.

Infra Red Lamp
This is the simplest form of brooder consisting of a spun aluminium shade and porcelain lamp holder (plastic or Bakelite fittings are not suitable for infra red). The bulb is what is known as a Dull Emitter. It is of robust construction being made of ceramic and not glass and has a much longer life span than a glass bulb, which are known to shatter if accidentally splashed with water. They only give off hear (no light) and are available to be purchased separately from the unit. (See price list)

Tubular Heaters

Made from 2 inch diameter drawn galvanised tube with a heater output of 60 watts per foot. i.e. 5ft = 300 watts. Each tube comes completely wired with 5ft of heat resistant cable and supplied mounting brackets.
We recommend 1 watt of of heat per cubic foot of birdroom i.e. length x width x height for frost protection 10 degrees F above outside temperatures and to double this for higher temperatures. An insulated birdroom would reduce the above requirements and a thermostat is recommended to give accurate temperature control and cut costs of running the tube by approx. 50%.

Iondisers
Iondisc: An ioniser designed specially for birdrooms and incubation rooms. The Iondisc fits a standard lamp holder and should hang somewhere near the centre of the room for the best removal of dust and bacteria from the air. Two models are available.

Spot-Check Digital Thermometer
A very accurate, easily read instrument specifically designed for incubators.   The range is 32° C to 40° C and it is 10 times more accurate than most digital thermometers.  It reads to 0.01° C with an accuracy of ± 0.1° C.  Switchable between ° F and ° C.  Battery life is about 8 months in continuous use.

Hospital/Brooding Cage

Headed by 150 watt economical ceramic heater.  Electronic Thermostat control accurate to 1° C.  Outside accessible feeders (to prevent disturbance to sick bird).   All cages come complete with carrying handle, perch, internal thermometer, punch bar and sliding Perspex front.
Though designed as a hospital cage this unit is now being successfully used as a brooder - removal of the perch leaves you with 2 cubic feet of thermostatically controlled environment.  The outside accessible feeders can be filled with water to obtain correct humidity levels if required, making it ideal for the rearing of young birds.   And of course you still have the added insurance that you have a hospital cage should the need arise.
